Paragliding at Mala, in the north-east of Lanzarote

A classic takeoff beside the Presa de Mala dam, flown in north-east and east wind, with the plains and the coast below. It is at its best from October to March.

Mala is a village in the north-east of Lanzarote, in the municipality of Haría. Above it, next to the Presa de Mala dam, is one of the classic paragliding takeoffs on the island, with the plains and the east coast spread out below.

What you will see

The pilots take off from the slope beside the dam and fly out over the open country in front of it. They land on the plains in front, down towards the coast, or back on top beside the takeoff.

When it flies

Mala faces the north-east and east wind, the direction of the trade wind that blows across Lanzarote. It needs a moderate breeze, so it is at its best from October to March, when that wind is gentler. In summer the trade wind is often too strong for it.

Where to watch from

The takeoff is reached by a dirt track of about 3 km from the village of Mala, so the easiest place to see the wings is the plains below the dam, where they come in to land.

Flying here yourself

You do not need to be a pilot to fly at Mala. Tandem flights take off here when the wind suits it, with a professional pilot flying the wing and you sitting in front. Look for the button below.
