The north-west of Lanzarote is volcanic country: black lava fields, known locally as malpaís, red volcanic cones and a low, rocky coast above the Atlantic. Two paragliding sites are here, both in the municipality of Tinajo.
Tenesar
Tenesar is a low ridge along the coast, with takeoffs between about 10 and 80 m above the sea. The wings soar along it in the wind coming off the ocean, over the surf and the lava, with Famara and La Graciosa in the distance. It has smooth air and big, open landing areas, and it is one of the gentler sites on the island.
El Cuchillo
El Cuchillo is a takeoff at the Caldera del Cuchillo, near the village of the same name. Pilots launch facing the volcanic crater, at about 112 m, and it is used by hang gliders as well as paragliders. It is reached by a dirt track of about 1 km from the village.
When they fly
Both sites need the wind from the north, between north-west and north-east, and a steady breeze of it. That is the trade wind at its strongest, so this is mostly summer flying, when the wind across the island is at its steadiest.
Where to watch from
- Tenesar, from the coast near the takeoffs. The flights stay low over the shore, so you see them close.
- El Cuchillo, from the village, about 1 km from the takeoff.
Flying here yourself
You do not need to be a pilot to fly in Lanzarote. Tandem flights go wherever the day's wind works, with a professional pilot flying the wing and you sitting in front. Look for the button below.
